Malaysia still at the top

ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES: Athletes grab 10 gold, nine silver, six bronze medals

MALAYSIA continued to be top of the class in Vientiane, Laos, winning another 10 gold, nine silver and six bronze at the Asean University Games yesterday.

The Malaysians led the table with 49 gold, 35 silver and 45 bronze. Vietnam are second (44 gold, 24 silver, 17 bronze) while Thailand are third (26 gold, 36 silver and 34 bronze).

Malaysia dominated the archery team events, winning three of the four gold medals on offer. Liew Tek Wa, Wan Mohd Khalmizam Wan Ab Aziz and Nazrin Aizad Mat Nasir (who had finished fourth in the World University championships in Spain last July), overcame a spirited Indonesia (Riau Ega Agata Salsabilla, Rahmat Sulistyawan, Alek Edwar) 17-16 in the team recurve final.

Sarita Cham Nong, Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh and Norhayati Al Madhihah Hashim clinched the women's team recurve gold after beating Laos (Bupha Thana, Daophasouk Detsone, Souphaphone Xayxanasongkham) 14-6 in the final.

Malaysia also captured the men's team compound event when Mohd Kaharuddin Ashah, Mohd Firdaus Isa and Kurniadi Mukhtar defeated Laos (Thanonglith Siriphonh, Khamvare Vanlivong, Daliya Saidara) 15-10.

Ezryn Meza Mohd Hamzah, Siti Sholeha Mohd Yusof and Shahira Abdul Halim, however, had to settle for silver in the women's team compound after a 10-15 loss to Indonesia.

In swimming, Malaysia sizzled with six gold, three silver and one bronze. Siow Yi Ting bagged the women's 200m breaststroke gold in 2:34.88s ahead of Indonesia's Margareta Kretapradani who finished second (2:41.16s). Third was Thailand's Chontida Onnim with 2:48:41s.

Khoo Cai Lin took the women's 400m freestyle gold with 4:22.84s, ahead of Ressa Kania Dewi of Indonesia (4:32.32s) and Thai Chawiwan Khammee (4:35:86s).

Kevin Yeap won the men's 400m freestyle with 4:03.94s. Thailand's Siwat Matangkapong (4:07.03s) was second and Putera Muhammad Randa of Indonesia was third with 4:09.18s.

Chan Kah Yan triumphed in the women's 100m backstroke in 1:06.22s while teammate Chui Lai Kwan (1:06.88s) was second. Filipina Ma Claire Adorna clocked 1:07.31s for third place.
