Former deputy president Karim to sue MAF

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Karim Ibrahim (pic), who was suspended for six years for his involvement in two doping incidents, is suing the Malaysian Athletic Federation (MAF).

MAF president Datuk Zainal Ahmad Abidin, who chaired a three-hour council meeting yesterday, revealed that Karim sent a lawyer’s letter on April 11 stating his intention to sue MAF.

In the first incident, relay runner Mohd Yunus Lasaleh tested positive for methandienone, a drug commonly used as an aid for muscle growth, in the Indonesia SEA Games last November.

Yunus, from Sabah, alleged that it was Karim, a former deputy president of the MAF, who told him to take the pills and injections given by a Bulgarian doctor while he was training in Miri last September. Karim had, allegedly, told him that they were vitamin supplements.

Besides Yunus, the other members of the 4x400m relay team who won the gold medal in the SEA Games were P. Yuvaraaj, Schzuan Ahmad Rosely and S. Kannathasan. They were subsequently stripped of the medal.

In the second case, former national chief coach Harun Rasheed had alleged that Karim was the one who told six national sprinters not to give their urine samples when requested by the National Sports Institute (NSI) on May 24 last year.

The sprinters who skipped the dope tests were Siti Fatima, Siti Zubaidah Adabi, Yee Yi Ling, Nurul Sarah Kadir, Norjannah Hafiszah Jamaludin and Noor Imran Hadi.

“We have written a reply to Karim’s lawyer on April 16. We are ready to challenge him in court as we had followed the proper procedures when we handed him the suspension,” said Zainal.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison.
