PALEMBANG, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia kicked of the Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) campaign in style by claiming a gold, a silver and a bronze medal in karate at the Sriwijaya Promotion Centre, here, today.
With the three medals collected, Malaysia ended today's proceedings in fourth place behind Egypt, Iran and Turkey.
Egypt picked up three gold, two silver, one bronze medal to lead the list of 46 Islamic nations although Iran who also have the same number of gold, silver and bronze are second in the list due to the alphabetical order practiced.
Turkey are in third place with one gold, two silver and a bronze.
Host Indonesia are in seventh place with four bronze medals.
All three medals won by Malaysia today were from karate with Lim Chee Wei providing the loudest cheers of the day for the Malaysian contingent when he won the men's individual Kata gold.
Another karate exponent, Nisha Alagasan won the silver in the women's Kumite U-55kg category while Celine Lee Xin Yi contributed a bronze medal in the women's individual Kata.
The men's badminton squad also started off in style by white washing Azerbaijan 5-0 at the Dempo Jaka Baring badminton stadium while wushu and swimming are also expected to contribute medals.
