PETALING JAYA: National shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi capped a great run in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy by overcoming a stiff challenge to win her third and fourth gold medal at the Subang Shooting Range.

The Armed Forces shooter qualified for Sunday’s final in top spot in the women’s 10m air rifle event with a 417.3 total. Team-mate Shahera Rahim Raja finished second with a score of 413.6.
In the final, the sparring partners were once again neck and neck, challenging for the gold medal. However, it was Nur Suryani who managed to hold her nerve to return with a 205.3 total for her third gold.

Shahera took the silver with a score of 204.0 while Nur Farah Afiqah Mohd Taufekh of Malacca won the bronze with a score of 180.9.

“The competition was very tight coming into the last couple of shots. I was nervous but the excitement of being in the final with my sparring partner presented a big challenge and I took it head on,” said Suryani, who won the 50m rifle three position individual and team golds on Thursday.
The atmosphere during the final was intense.

“There was a sense of excitement and we all felt the pressure because of the cheering from the crowd. It was a challenge for me to make sure I shot well,” she added.

“I am happy with my performance today. However, there are certain weaknesses that I have to work on in my 50m rifle three position event,” said Suryani.

Suryani picked up her fourth gold when she partnered Shahera and Haslisa Hamed to take the 10m air rifle team title for Forces with a 1,236.3 score. Pahang took home the silver while Selangor bagged the bronze.

If everything goes according to plan, Suryani will be going to the seventh Asian Airgun Championships in Kuwait from March 7-13.

Meanwhile, Eddy Chew of Johor won the men’s 50m pistol event with a 189.5 total. Jasmi Mohamad Zin of Negri Sembilan won the silver while Siau Zianyi of Perak took the bronze.

Eddy combined with Choo Wen Yan and Nor Afiffuddin Nordin to take the team gold with a 1,557 score. Pahang took the silver while Malacca bagged the bronze.

Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
