Chong Wei advances to quaterfinals


COPENHAGEN: WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei is through to the quarter-final of the World Championships in Copenhagen, following an easy win over Ireland's Scott Evans in the third round earlier today.

Chong Wei, who decided to go with a softer approach, needed only 36 minute to dispatch the Irish shuttler 21-11, 21-12.

The 31-year-old, will face former World Junior Champion Wang Zhengming of China next. Chong Wei is also expected to up his tempo as he edges closer toward his maiden world title.
"Chong Wei decided to add a little variety into his game today after two quick matches in the first and second round.

"It may have seemed that Chong Wei had slowed down in his attack, but the fact is he only soften his game. He never slows down.

"The match against Zhengming will be totally different though. The China shuttler will be a tougher opponent, and Chong Wei will surely be tested," said men's singles coach Tey Seu Bock, when contacted in Copenhagen.

There were mixfortunes however in the men's doubles as Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong progressed to the next stage while 2010 silver medalist Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong crashed out.
The seventh seeded Thien How-Wee Kiong,came from a game down to defeat Japan's Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda 19-21, 21-17, 21-19 and will play South Korea's Ko Sung Hyun-Shin Baek Choel next.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong's illustrious partnership finally came to an end as the pair succumbed to a 14-21, 21-10, 21-19 defeat to Taiwan's Lee Sheng Mu-Tsai Chia Hsin.

Meanwhile, there will also be a new women's singles champion following the shock exit of defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.

The 18-year-old Thai went down 8-21, 21-12, 21-18 to Japan's Minatsu Mitani.

Govt Always Gives Emphasis To Sporting Culture, Says PM

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
